    Mrs Pollifax Grandmother Spy

Senior citizen Mrs Pollifax had always wanted to be a spy. Marriage and children changed her plans. Now she is a widow , her children are grown. She is severely depressed because she feels no one needs her any more. Her doctor advises her to do something she has always wanted to do. She decides to travel to CIA headquarters to apply for a position as a spy. The young man interviewing her is not going to give a position to grandma, but he is called from the room before he can refuse her. Mr. Carstairs, who becomes her handler, mistakenly hires her to be a courier for a package in Mexico because he likes the way she looks. She will spend 3 weeks in Mexico posing as a tourist then pick up a book and return with it to the U.S. He advises her to remember that she is a courier and not a spy. Mrs Pollifax is having a wonderful time as a tourist when she decides to visit the book shop in advance. She meets the owner, and they hit it right off. He gives her a book about playing Solitaire. As she leaves the shop he tosses her a deck of cards. When she returns to retrieve the book for her mission there is another man in his place who says he is the real owner of the shop. Mrs Pollifax is suspicious about this. He offers her tea which she accepts. When she wakes up after drinking the tea she finds herself tied up to Mr. Farrell ( an agent posing as an art dealer). They are taken by plane to Albania where they are held prisoner. Farrell is wounded when he jumps off a cliff trying to commit suicide so that he can't be tortured to reveal secrets. Playing Solitaire helps her to keep up her spirits, and endure her captivity. All the guards at the prison like Mrs Pollifax. They try to accommodate her every wish. She has already decided that she and Farrell are going to escape. She acquires a map , a gun, and a knife through her friendship with the guards- not that the know about it. They bring with them a Chinese prisoner who is being held in the cell next door. The details of the escape are riveting, so is the information that they return to CIA headquarters with. This is the beginning of her new career. Mrs Pollifax has adventures all over the world picking up a dazzling array of skills as she goes along. In every story Mrs Pollifax in her own special way saves the day. The vast majority of those who have read these books, including myself, love Mrs Pollifax. Dorothy Gilman has created a very entertaining character. Her research is very extensive so there is always something to learn about the countries that Mrs Pollifax is assigned to.
You are very likely to become a fan too.

    Mrs POLIFAX series audio books

Have listened to the first two books of this collection and are delighted. They are better than when we first read them 15 years ago.
